When information is king, it is important to capture as much data about your output environment as is possible. In output terms, the devil really is in the detail.
These days, print software will track and report all printing activity in a Windows environment, networked printing through a Print Server, as well as printing using a locally attached printer.
The information generated will include more than 40 elements and can be further enhanced with elements from the Microsoft Active Directory. As an example, it will include detailed information on the following:

- Number of pages
- Total number of pages
- Pages printed per day across the organisation
- Pages per printer per day/week/month

- Total number of sheets used
- Job size
- Distinguish direct printing from printing through a print server
Software will track up to 30 days of printing done from a
portable computer when not attached to the network and report the
information when the portable computer is logged on to the network.
The data collected can be used to secure a better
basis for decision making in a number of cases such as Outsourcing of the
printer management; Replacement and consolidation of printers and Introducing
print saving software.
